Scotch

Lagavulin 8 Year

  • October 8th, 2023

My Notes

I've only recenly been getting into scotch, and Lagavulin is one of those high peat scotches that might turn some people off. I promise you, if you tollerate the smokey peat on this whiskey you get some lovely flavors of creme brule, banana pudding, orage peel and maybe some sweet vanilla. The smokey and oaky notes of the peat are a really nice accompaniment to the flavors above.

This is a relatively young scotch at 8 years. They make an 11 and 16 year variety that are a bit better, but also the price tag goes up for those, as well.

To me, this is great with a cigar or a cold night by a fireplace. I've even dabbled in mixing this into a cocktail with some bourbon to add some smokey creamy notes to the mix. This is a good scotch, but I think there are better ones on the market, unless you are really into peat.

How to Taste
With your whiskey at room temperature, put the glass near your nose and close your eyes and inhale. What do you smell? Drink a sip, just enough to cover your tounge and swish it around front, left and right. then down the hatch. What do you taste? If it burns a little, maybe try to add a couple drops of water. Otherwise, try again - usually after the initial burn, you may get some of the flavors you are looking for.
