Black Band Distilling Rye Whiskey

  • October 25th, 2023

My Notes

Just outside of downtown Peoria, there is a distillery called Black Band. They make a couple different expressions, inclusing this Rye whiskey. It doesnt have an age statement on the bottle or the website, so I'm going to guess its relatively young, less than a year.

That being said, its a pretty dark rye, with rich rye scents and under that some dried fruit and even some sweetness. The taste is similar, it tastes like a whiskey that hasnt aged very long, not a lot of complexity from the barrel. There is a fair amount of honey sweetness on this one and some spicy rye. but at 90 proof, its pretty drinkable.

I'd use this in an old fashioned or a sazerac, not sure its worth the price. Maybe once these ryes age for a few years, this will be a robust rye to sip on.

How to Taste
With your whiskey at room temperature, put the glass near your nose and close your eyes and inhale. What do you smell? Drink a sip, just enough to cover your tounge and swish it around front, left and right. then down the hatch. What do you taste? If it burns a little, maybe try to add a couple drops of water. Otherwise, try again - usually after the initial burn, you may get some of the flavors you are looking for.
